  • 3 weeks!

It recently occurred to me how very soon this baby is due. I'm 37 weeks pregnant. That means that should I go into labor today, I'd technically be considered "full term" and Isaac could be born at the birth center rather than a hospital.

    Wow!

I sooooo don't feel ready. Last night I almost panicked when I realized I don't have any newborn diapers. I sent my cloth ones to Tessa when Olivia was born. She has out grown them by now, I'm sure (as she's such a chunk), but they are still in Washington. Mom will bring them down next week. So, I have to buy some disposables "just in case" this baby should come before next Wednesday.

I also have no bottles with nipples that would work for a newborn. Not particularly planning on needing bottles, but you never know.

Blankets need washed, newborn clothes need to be brought out of storage, and I need to go to Target. Diapers, a couple of bottles and a diaper bag are on the list of things to buy TODAY!

Oh, and we need to pick a car seat and get it IN THE VAN at some point. It would be nice to be able to bring Isaac home after he's born!

And that brings us to the birth. You know, there is just no comfortable way to get a baby out once it gets in there. I've attended home births, hospital births, birth center births, clinic births, natural births, medicated births, a VBAC a c-section (mine!); I've seen the beauty and miracle of the birthing process God designed. And I'm still working on not being scared of what I've gotta go through in a couple of weeks. Not sure if it's the process or the pain that is the most daunting. I've seen the process work, but it still seems amazing and almost impossible for a real live human being to fit through such a small space and come out. Of course, as one midwife said, "Do we really think that God made us fearfully and wonderfully and then forgot to make the hole big enough?!" I guess it would be laughable to think that He overlooked something like that.

And to think that not only have women been having babies for thousands of years, cats and pigs and donkeys and bunnies have been doing it, too (and much more freguently than most of us). The process really does work! But it's still gonna hurt! Oh well...you gotta do what you gotta do. And I can assure you that having a c-section doesn't take the pain away. It just spreads it out over days. (At least it did for me.)

Here's to hoping for a relatively short, uncomplicated labor and delivery sometime in the next few weeks!

  • Should Christians Circumcise?

    Should We Circumcise?

As a mother of boys (well, one here and one on the way), the circumcision decision is one that I’ve had to make. But when the time came that my first son was born, the decision was clear in my mind.

I had grown up hearing all the medical reasons that circumcision was to be performed. Then, I heard the conservative Christian side, honoring God’s design and all of that, even the reasons we should do it on the 8th day of life.

Then I read an article in a Reader’s Digest about the subject. It piqued my interest as a Christian because it said that Gentile believers had not circumcised since the time of the New Testament until recently.

Then came the time that I was to study circumcision as part of my midwifery studies. I read the material and looked at Scripture. That experience made it very easy for me to know what I was going to do when my first son was born.

Just in case someone else is trying to make that decision is trying to wade through all the conflicting information out there, I’ve put together a list of the New Testament teachings on the subject. I’ll also include a couple of links to some medical information in case you want to look at the decision from that perspective. It is a personal decision, but one that we should be informed about.

    Blessings!

    Heart Circumcision

For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.

Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?

And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfill the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?

For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:

But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. (Rom. 2: 25-29)

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. (Col. 2:8-12))

    Circumcision Nothing

Is any man called being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised. Is any called in uncircumcision? let him not be circumcised.

Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God. (I Cor. 7: 18,19).

For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. (Gal. 5:6)

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. (Gal. 6:15)

But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

    Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. (Col. 3:8-11)

    Warnings About Circumcsion

Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.

For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.

Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.

For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.

Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?

This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you.

A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.

I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be.

And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased.

I would they were even cut off which trouble you.

For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. (Gal. 5: 1-13)

(The following passages are from different Bible translations. Notice, the strong language Paul uses toward those who are teaching circumcision and the keeping of the OT law.)

For freedom did Christ set us free: stand fast therefore, and be not entangled again in a yoke of bondage. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that, if ye receive circumcision, Christ will profit you nothing. Yea, I testify again to every man that receiveth circumcision, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.

Ye are severed from Christ, ye would be justified by the law; ye are fallen away from grace. For we through the Spirit by faith wait for the hope of righteousness.

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith working through love. Ye were running well; who hindered you that ye should not obey the truth?

This persuasion came not of him that calleth you. A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. I have confidence to you-ward in the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be.

But I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? then hath the stumbling-block of the cross been done away.

I would that they that unsettle you would even go beyond circumcision. For ye, brethren, were called for freedom; only use not your freedom for an occasion to the flesh, but through love be servants one to another. (American Standard Version)

I wish those who unsettle you would emasculate themselves! (English Standard Version)

I wish those who unsettle and confuse you would [[c]go all the way and] cut themselves off! (Amplified)

As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!

    (NIV)

As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ.

For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh.

But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.

And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. (Gal. 6: 12-16)

Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.

For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. (Phil. 3: 2,3)

(Again, the same passage in various Bible translations. The context shows that the word “concision” is a reference to those who teach circumcision, referred to here as “mutilation of the flesh.”)

Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh . (ESV)

Look out for those dogs [Judaizers, legalists], look out for those mischief-makers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. For we [Christians] are the true circumcision, who worship God in spirit and by the Spirit of God and exult and glory and pride ourselves in Jesus Christ, and put no confidence or dependence [on what we are] in the flesh and on outward privileges and physical advantages and external appearances-- (Amplified)

  • Nathan's memories

I've heard that children about age 3 and under are able to remember life in the womb, birth, etc. My sister and bil were surprised when their son recounted to them his birth a few months ago (hand motions, since he doesn't have a lot of words yet).

So, the other night, as we were talking to baby #2, I decided to ask Nathan if he could remember when he was inside of mommy. He said, "Yes." He also sais that he could remember coming out. We asked what happened after he came out and he imitated a baby cry. (Anyone who was on that floor of the hospital can probably remember his cry!) He also said, "Come out. Cut, cut." Yes, he was delivered by cesearean. And when he was telling us this, he kept pointing to my incision scar (it wasn't showing) and saying, "In there. Come out."

Amazing, huh? Just had to share!

  • Road Trip News

So, we have been away from home for over 2 weeks. It took us 4 and a half days to get to Spokane for David and Annalisa (Craig) Beroth's wedding. It was one of the sweetest weddings I've ever attending and I don't think I've ever seen a happier groom. David wrote a song which he sang for Annalisa. Their vows represented a lot of what Scripture teaches about marriage. It was a very sweet, God-honoring wedding.

During the 4 1/2 days that it took us to get to Spokane, we went from Texas to Oklahoma to Kansas to Colorado to Wyoming to Montana, across Idaho and finally into Washington. Travelling with Nathan meant shorter days, but it was nice and we even got to stop and see Mary on the way.

After the wedding we enjoyed a nice parade in Spokane and then continued west. We've been in South Bend or Everett for about a week, enjoying seeing friends and family and waiting to meet the new little Black baby, our first niece. Hopefully, for her Mamma's sake, she comes soon. Tessa's getting uncomfortable.
